After experiencing difficulties with downloading and installing microsoft
system updates including service pack two (another story) and an "attack" of
adware and spyware that made my system unuseable, my computer did a shutdown
seemingly on its own. It may have been caused by some button I clicked on in
a dialogue box while trying to work through all the pop-ups I was getting.
When the system came back up, I logged in using the one user login I have
configured. The login came up with my screen background but nothing else. I
have no start button - nothing - blank screen except for background. The
only way I can do anything is getting into Task Manager and run individual
programs, but I don't know what to run to attempt to fix this problem.
Remember any help needs to address the state of my machine which is no Sart
menu button. I recently did a partial reload attempting to fix the problems
I had with downloading and installing updates. After the partial restore,
the system did come up normally. The reason I mention this is because I do
not have a restore point to go back to. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

Try this:

Boot your machine into safe mode (hit F8 as Windows starts and select Safe
Mode). Now you should see an Administrator account on your welcome screen.
Logon as the Administrator. You should now be able to delete your old user
account and create a new one. It's a good idea to create a second account
in the administrator group to use in events such as this one. It's also a
good idea to create a strong password for the primary Administrator account
while you're at it. Just DO NOT FORGET IT!
