When I first installed XP (years ago) I was able to zip and unzip large
numbers of files very rapidly. Now the unzip (extraction) function is
extreemly slow. Fortunately the zip, or compression part of the program
still works normally. How can I repair this problem?

Remove about 80% of your programs and files? That should do it.
But seriously, I don't think this is a malfunction at all, the
unzip is just bogged down. You might want to try a different ZIP
client. Some are faster than others.

Hi Al,

It might. :o) However, I think this has to do with size, etc.

Just a thought, when was the last time you did Disk CleanUp and Defrag?
R-click the drive icon and select Properties. Start there.

Thanks to all who replyed. This is the one I am answering because, goofy as
it sounds, it is the one that seems to have solved the problem. I had
thousands of small files on the drive/logical that I was attempting the
zipping on. The folder I zipped was 57megs in size and took about 35
seconds. But when I tried to extract the zipped files it took 9 minutes!!!
BUT after deleting most of those thousands of files I ran a test with
another folder of 57megs. The zip time was the same, about 35 seconds. But
the extraction time was much faster - about 45 seconds.

Another problem that went away at the same time was the time it took My
Computer to load the information from the drive. From the time I clicked on
it (D: in this case) it had been taking 30 seconds before it would report
any information. After deleting all those extra files the report time
became instantaneous.

So - thank you Al !!!!

Hey, it's what I'm here for. That, and to make cute comments
sometimes. Hear this, Microsoft people? Start polishing up that
MVP title for me.
