I know this might seem like a silly question, but did you already try going
into Hardware Manager (it's in the System control panel) and un-intalling and
then re-installing the drive?

yeah i tried that
it seems that win xp 64 does not have low level aspi drivers so i got told
to install nero 6 ! which is currently downloading. but shouldnt win xp allow
me to drag and drop files to burn em ?

Nero 6 has some unusual qualities for making DVD drives work properly, that
is true.
But I can't tell you much about Win XP 64-bit edition. Last I heard, that
was still in beta testing!
I do know that Windows XP Home edition won't let you drag-drop-and-burn CDs
or DVDs if Windows thinks the drive is a standard CD drive; even if burner
programs will burn just fine.
