Is SP1 good for XP??

Hi All, (Especially MVP's)
As starters, I am not computer literate.
My OS is windows XP Home Edition (upgraded from Windows ME) on Dell Inspiron
4000.
I have installed SP1 (rather than SP2 because of it's larger size) in my
computer without any problems approx three months ago. In the course of
reading the newsgroups I happen to come across the following statement, "SP1
is no good for Windows XP". I am now confused, (maybe I neglected to read
the fine print) and am wondering if my installing SP1 was a mistake and if
so/not so, what is my next step. Thanks for your expertise.

PS.. Up till now my computer has not gotten any Viruses or worms due to
firewall installed by my ISP.

SP2 is an update to SP1........you should update to SP2 for better security
as well as certain clitches that were fixed as part of that package.
You should also get your own Anti Virus program as well as firewall and anti
ad ware program.
I can recommend. AVG Anti Virus,Zone Alarm for firewall and 3 anti adware
programs...Sysbot Search&Destroy,Adaware SE personal ....all of them are
free and doing a google search will turn them up.The 3rd anti adware program
is CounterSpy and it cost $20.00.

Frank, SP1 is a part of SP2. When SP1 came out, it caused problems for a few
users, just like SP2 does today. Not sure what "SP1 is no good for Windows
XP" was all about, since SP2 sure wouldn't work on another operating system.
Don't worry about your SP1, and be sure to get SP2, because it has added
features for security and more. You can pick up a free SP2 disk at a
computer store (just call first). Also, be sure to get antivirus, as it
protects against things your firewall cannot help with. A free AV would be
AVG from Grisoft, which I use.

Your next step is to install SP2.

Absolutely no question about it.

All of these are Fairly Decent suggestions, only problem is thats alot of
programs to run on your computer. System resources are taxed heavily. A
better solution would be Panda Platinum Internet Security, Does everything
you mentioned, can run on PC's with as little as 128MB of ram without
dramaticaly affecting performance. To date the Program is not currenlty
being sold in retail stores in the US.

There is nothing wrong with SP1 per se, but you should upgrade to SP2.
There are many advantages to it. Befor doing so read through these
links to make the transition go well. Make sure you have a full and
complete backup - as you should normally. Why are you concerned about
the added space needed by SP2? Is the drive small? If so consider
upgrading to a larger one. Disk drives are relatively inexpensive.
