search does not work on XP

I used to be able to find it all, now about half comes up.
Is the search for for files different on XP?

What are you searching for? Perhaps you do not have "Show all files and
folders" enabled. If so search won't display hidden files/folders.

A lot of posters complain about the XP search. And a lot of replies point
them to Agent Ransack which is free and apparently does a great job. Google
will find it for you.

In folder options--view have you set 'show hidden files and folders' and
not checked hide extensions and system files?

I didn't care for Agent Ransack enough to keep it. The uninstall left
lots of memorabilia in the Registry.

I am also having difficulty with the search feature, only
my problem is that it totally locks up my system when I
try to use it. Is there a fix for this?
