Thanks Ian,

Yeah, I have ACDSee on my old hard drive and plan to
install it soon as a second drive on my new XP.

Brent, I had this tidbit saved in my notes. It's a post from another
user and it tells how they dealt with a similar problem. In their case
JPG files were being noted as JPEG but since the situation is so similar
and the info may help you out, I'm posting it anyhow:

QUOTE:
"... It was very annyoing to me that the Save Picture As only used the
jpeg extension. Many of my graphics applications don't recognize jpeg as
jpg and wouldn't open the files. The JPG extension seems to be
universally accepted in all of my graphics programs, which isn't the
case with JPEG. So, I posted in this group, and someone responded,
giving me the following, which fixed the problem for me:

If you know how to use regedit, navigate to the key
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg

Check the name "Extension" in the right pane, it should be of type
REG_SZ, with Data ".jpg" if not double click it and type in .jpg

If you don't have this key at all or if you don't know how to use
regedit, copy and paste the following text into a new [Notepad] file and
name it "jpegfile.reg"

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg]
"AutoplayContentTypeHandler"="PicturesContentHandler"
"CLSID"="{25336920-03F9-11cf-8FD0-00AA00686F13}"
"Extension"=".jpg"
"Image Filter CLSID"="{607fd4e8-0a03-11d1-ab1d-00c04fc9b304}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\image/jpeg\Bits]
"0"=hex:02,00,00,00,ff,ff,ff,d8

Then double click on the file to import it into the registry..."

END OF QUOTE.
