Hello I have bought a brand new dell machine with windows
XP home edition about a year ago. well one day i start my
computer up just like any other day and it gave me an
error right after the dell logo appeared. it said that
some hardware or software had been changed since last time
and that it wants to know how i want to start my computer.
first off i did nothing different to it from the night
before when i had last touched it. Second no matter what
option i choose to boot my computer with it will load
about 95% done and then right at the last second it will
stop and then flash a blue screen with a bunch of white
text on it. it then reboots itself. I had even left it one
all night and it kept going through and rebooting itself
time after time again. i tried to do a system restore but
it asked me for a administrator password. well i know that
when i got my computer i never typed in an administrator
password! i mean is there a generic dell password that
they put in when they had installed it? if so please tell
me and my problems would be solved! but anyways since i
don't know this password i need to re-install windows XP.
but the problem is that, all my files that i have worked
on for more than a year.....all my saved games, school
work, and everything else i would need in the future is
all locked up in my user folder!!! so when i plug this
hard drive into my brothers computer i can access it by
using his hard drive to boot from and then having my hard
drive as the second. but the problem is since my user
folder is password protected how can i back this folder
up?? can i just copy and past it else where on his hard
drive and then once i reload my machine put that folder
back on my newly reloaded machine and it will once again
reconize my user? please help me! my files are at stake!!!

thanks

no it can not! no matter what other option i choose for
booting it always boots for 95% of it and then it stops
and reboots. But for some reason i only get that brief
flash of blue error message when i boot normally all other
options just stop in mid load and then reboot!

thanks again!

Marcus;
If you can not boot to Safe Mode and you can not choose "Last known
good configuration", try a Repair Installation:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_install.htm

Otherwise if you take your hard drive to another computer, you will
have to Take Ownership to have access to the data:

Hello mate

I am having teh same problem at the moment and i have
been recommended to change the RAM i have in the machine
as a blue screen usually idetifies a problem with the
RAM - i changed mine and it boots up as normal...but I
would recommend backing up all your files once you get in
just in case this happens again......

According to the techy at work Windows XP does tend to
cause prpblems with the RAM (i.e. the bluescreens) and
that is the best palce to start, plus RAM is quite cheap
so it can save you a bit of time with regards to the Re-
installation of XP which is a pain.....trust me!!!

Hope that helps......
