Hello everyone, I hope someone can help me with this issue, it's been driving
me nuts for weeks!

My system:
ASUS P4S533-VM
Windows XP Pro SP2
4 on-board USB ports
Device Manager shows "SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller"

Problem: USB 2.0 suddenly stopped working. Device Manager shows 2 Unknown
Devices. If I disable the Enhanced Host Controller, the unknown devices get
detected (Epson scanner and D-Link USB hub), but they are running only as USB
1.1 or slower. If I enable the Host Controller, they become unknown devices
again. SiS and D-Link says WinXP should detect and install the drivers for
the USB.

Steps already taken:
1) Updated the mobo BIOS to latest version
2) Re-installed SP2 .
3) Unplugged all USB devices
4) Uninstalled all USB in Device Manager
5) Rebooted and let WinXP detect everything.
6) Right-click, update driver. (wizard could not find a better match...)
7) Did this in Safe Mode and Normal mode.

The thing is, it was working for maybe a year or so since SP1, and for
months since I upgraded to SP2. Then a few weeks ago, it just stopped working.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I see you had these devices working earlier. Hope the ports are not
malfunctioning. Try updating chipset drivers too.

If your computer has any diagnostics software like PC Doctor run a test on
the ports.

I wish I could offer you help, as the same thing has happened to one of my
computers. All of a sudden XP has lost sight of my USB2 devices. I hadn't
installed a thing, nor do I even use that computer very often. I haven't
had the time to try and troubleshoot it. But it does show just what a mess
M$ has made with their USB2 drivers. Simply ... they are a p.o.s.

Good luck resolving the problems. I know I'll need it. :-(

It has happened to me that the O/S seems to lose track of a plugged in
device if it is not used for a while. In my case it is a USB 2.0 scanner.
All I have to do is unplug the USB cable from the scanner and then plug it
back in. The device is then detected and runs fine. Give it a try!

Hi

I have just xperienced exactly the same thing, also with the SIS PCI USB
Enhanced Controller. Might this be a general propblem with the SIC PCI
controller ? I have tried to find something on SIS homepage, but without
luck. It is a real pain i the .... I have removed SP 2, but it does not work
anyway. Thanks MS, before the SP2 everything worked perfectly, no my
Videocapture device, DVD-burner and flash disks only work at slow speed, that
true product development ...
Regards
Lars

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've posted the same thing on USBMAN.COM and
will follow a set of tips here:

http://www.usbman.com/Guides/SiS%20USB%20Tips%20and%20Tricks.htm

Anyway, I've spent a lot of time on this and will probably just buy a 5 port
USB PCI card. I've googled the issue and have seen many questions with the
SiS chipset, but not one working solution.

Eleven years working with computers and I can't figure this out. As Master
Yoda would say, "Hmm, how embarassing..." (sorry, I've just been through a
marathon viewing of Star Wars)

Hope you all had a good long weekend.

Hello,

It's been a while since my last post, and I was able to finally make my USB
2 work! Now, there is no guarantee that this is the definite solution, it
could be specific to my hardware, but for those deperate to try anything,
here goes:

(Note: BIOS settings are different, so the info below is only a concise
version of an ASUS P4S533-VM. Poke around to find where your settings are
located)

Initial BIOS settings:
plug and play OS:No
USB enabled: Yes
Usb 2.0 : Yes

Initial Windows settings:
WinXP SP2 (latest USB drivers)
All USB ports in device manager: enabled (This kills the 2.0 and runs only
in 1.1)

Steps taken:
1) Disable ALL USB ports in device manager.
(note: make sure you have a PS2 mouse/keyboard)
2) Reboot to BIOS
3) Set plug and play OS to YES
4) Set USB enabled: NO (this automatically sets the 2.0 to NO)
5) Save to BIOS
6) Reboot to OS
7) Reboot to BIOS
8) Set USB enabled: Yes
9) Set Usb 2.0 : Yes
10) Reboot to OS
11) Enable all USB in Device Manager

This worked for me, and I hope this helps somebody else.

Good luck!
