windows updates

Hi Im running windows xp and seem to be having a problem
installing the windows updates. This is on both the
critical updates as well as the other. I download them
accept the agreement, click install and then a message
comes up telling me the updates have not been installed
and to try again, which I have several times, but keeps
coming back to "updates have not installed try again"
There is no error message number etc. Can anyone help
