Windows Update- always shows 0 updates available

there used to always be at least a couple of items
listed as being available for update and would at the
very least show updates that i declined to download
during previous updates...but now it only says there
are 0 updates available now for downloading. has not
been any in over a month and i know there are always
new updates almost daily.
appreciate any help offered.
