This fix is to do with L2TP/IPSEC. I just installed this
on 3 machines at home thro windows update. Two are OK but
the installation on the 3rd proved a mistake, it
prevented my ethwrnet from working, couldnt access
anything on network via any method pinging etc. I removed
the hotfix and was back in business.
Any ideas on why one (Inspiron 8200) out of 3 machines
didnt like the Hotfix. All my machines are current with
the latest versions of XP, excluding of course the 8200
now!

Mike, would you please post your system specs for all three machines? In
particular, I'm interested in knowing what network cards and the driver
versions they are using for both the machines that succeeded and for the one
machine that is failing (Inspiron 8200).

Also, would you post what software or hardware firewalls you are using (if
any) to connect your machines to the internet? This includes the built in
Windows ICF or any third party firewalls like a wireless router or Zone
Alarm/Black Ice.
One more thing, for the failing machine, have you ever configured a VPN
session on it? (i.e. to connect the Inspiron to another network)

Thank you,
Chris Tuttle

Hi Mike,

Many users encounter network connection issues after installing 818043. The
root caused is still under researching. So far there are 2 methods to
temporarily workaround this issue:

1) Uninstall the hotfix (as you did).
2) Use System restore.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to hearing
from you.
