No problems until hard drive crash and aforementioned action. Properties say
that device is working properly, but IDE CD-ROM will not read any CD media
placed in tray. Windows XP recognizes it as a drive but will not read. I've
uninstalled driver, gone through all Troubleshooter procedures, gone to
LITEON website and researched Windows XP Help and support. This is one of
their newest drive models LTN226D. I don't know what else to do. HELP

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
[Start > Run and type: REGEDIT , and hit enter]

2. Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

4. Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.

6. Quit Registry Editor.NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value,
if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need
to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7. Restart your computer.

Get a DOS Boot disk from www.bootdisk.com with CD support.
Boot with it.
Try to read a CDROM disc.

If it works, it is Windows.
If it does not, it is hardware.

You could also try http://www.ubcd4win.com/

I followed your directions - after I rebooted I found that my usb drive is no
longer recognized and the CD ROM drive still will not read anything in the
tray. So now I can't reinstall my usb drive so I have no drive. What do I
do now?
