Don't know when it started happening, but now when I
cut/paste file(s) from XP explorer windows the file
listing does not auto refresh. The files do move
(cut/paste), but I now have to hit F5 to refresh the
listing. I'm almost sure this didn't start happening
until several months ago.

Frank, I remember this change in Explorer's behavior with WinME as well.
New files and folders are placed at the end of a list. It can be
annoying at times but if pulling in objects from multiple sources, I've
found it to useful for keeping track of what I've moved or haven't moved
to the new location.
Sorting can easily be done with Refresh, as you're doing now. Or you
could use the Details view in your folders and click any column's header
bar for sorts based on its category: name, size, date, and so on. There
are many new categories for XP's Explorer that are available under View>
Choose Details.
