View Full Version : Task Manager Doesn't End Task

I was working in FrameMaker (FM) on Windows XP (v. 5.1),
over a network to a ClearCase server. FrameMaker crashed,
and I was not able to end its task with the Task Manager
(TM). TThe TM did its end-task routine (hour glass
followed by dialog box asking to send an Error Report to
Microsoft), but the FM application was still there.

This was true whether I ended the FM application or the
process. The only way to clear it up was to shut
down/restart my computer. I tried quitting all other
applications, but the TM still couldn't end the FM task.
I notice that the CPU usage seemed to spike to near 100%
when the TM was trying to end the task.

This computer is decently equipped, with Pentium III-1200
MHz processor/1 GB RAM/40 GB hard drive (about 1/2 used).

This has happened before, usually with FrameMaker. (That
could be because I'm usually working in FrameMaker.)

Any help would be appreciated.

After using TM, is FrameMaker still listed as a running process? Is it
possible that it owns more than the one process that you are ending and
that needs an "end task" as well? If the application appears to be gone
from memory according to TM, try a refresh of the desktop to see if you
can make the leftover artifact window disappear.

I would also report this recurring problem to FrameMaker's tech support.
If they don't have a patch for their program's problem, they may at
least have a work around available for you.
