View Full Version : will not install downloaded updates
Joy

I downloaded and installed some updates yesterday (May
22), but later in the day I experienced some major
computer problems. The only solution was to do a system
restore (back to May 12). I then tried to re-do the
updates. However, only 2 of the 3 available "Critical",
and NONE of the available "Windows" updates installed.
I get an error message saying that they have downloaded,
but failed to install. I have tried 4 times--no success.
Does anyone have a solution for me?? Thanks!!

Joy;
Try there (Try #4 first):
POST BACK WITH THE EXACT INFORMATION FROM STEP 12 if all else fails.
1. Check Date/Time
2. Disable firewall
3. Disable antivirus
4. (Windows XP):
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;326815
Don't forget steps 6-9 catroot2 file.
Do this whether SP1 is the issue or not.
5. (Windows XP)
Go to Control Panel.
Click Windows Update on the left panel
6. Go to Internet Options in the Control Panel:
Delete Cookies
Delete Files (check box "Delete all offline content")
Clear History
7. If you use AOL, minimize AOL and open Internet Explorer and try
Windows Update
8. Set a language in Internet Explorer:
To check the language setting in Internet Explorer:
(1.) Click "Tools" and then select "Internet Options".
(2.) Click "Languages".
(3.) Make sure at least one language is listed in the "Language
Options" dialog box.
9. Disable the options "Automatically detect settings" and "Use
automatic configuration script."
To do this:
(1.) Open Internet Explorer.
(2.) Click "Tools," and then click "Internet Options."
(3.) Click "Connections," and then click "LAN Settings."
(4.) Make sure the check boxes for "Automatically detect settings" and
"Use automatic configuration script" are not selected.
10. Upgrade to Internet Explorer Service Pack 1 if not already
installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp
11. Start/Run
Type "msconfig" ENTER
Click Start-up tab and make a note of what is checked and unchecked.
Go back to General tab.
Select Selective Start-up (unless already selected).
Uncheck "Load Start-up group items".
Click OK, follow prompts and reboot.
Try windows Update again.
When done, go back to MSCONFIG.
Recheck Start-up tab items and place to normal Start-up if that was
original configuration.
Click OK and follow prompts.
12. Check the Windows Update Log in the "C:\Windows\Windows
Update.log" for the exact error message.
See if something here fits

>I (finally) got to try your suggestions, Jupiter, but to
no avail. Still no go. As per your #12 (re: Error
Message), I keep getting the same one: IUENGINE See
iuhist.xml for details: install finished (Error
0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)However, I
cannot seem to "Find" the troubleshooting site you
recommended. Any other suggestions?? Thanks for your
help.

Joy;
Temporarily disable any virus and Web accelerator/enhancement
programs.
Resolutions copied from the link:
Suggestion 1
==========
Reboot computer
This can occur if the hotfix installer was referencing:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log and the file was corrupt. Either
renaming C:
\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log or renaming the entire
C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2 folder will allow the hotfix install to
complete
normally.
OR
Suggestion 2
============
Reboot computer
Register the following system files.
1. On the "Start" menu, click "Run."
2. Type "regsvr32 licdll.dll" (without quotes).
3. Click "OK."
4. Type "regsvr32 regwizc.dll"(without quotes).
5. Click "OK."
OR
Suggestion 3
============
Reboot computer
This can occur if the "Microsoft Root Authority" certificate or the
"NO
LIABILITY ACCEPTED, (c)97 VeriSign, Inc." certificate under Trusted
Root
Certification Authorities has been removed. On another computer that
has the Microsoft Root Authority certificate installed, do the
following:
1. Open Internet Explorer.
2. Click "Tools," then click "Internet options."
3. Click "Content," and then click "Certificates."
4. Click "Trusted Root Certification Authorities."
5. Scroll down until you locate Microsoft Root Authority certificate.
6. Click "Export."
7. Follow the prompts to export the certificate to "DER encoded Binary
x.509(.CER)" file. On the computer that cannot install updates, follow
the steps to import the certificate you saved.
OR
Suggestion 4
============
Reboot computer
Try deleting the WUTEMP folder (C:\|WUTemp) or removing the contents
in that
folder. There might have been a trace of a past download or corrupted
content
in the folder that is causing the download to fail.
