View Full Version : PLEASE help, lockup issues

In the past week I have experienced many problems with my
pc. I recently downloaded the new DirectX 9.0a, (which i
had originally thought was the culprit) but now i'm
thinking otherwise. so here's my problem:

whenever i try to play ANY type of media (videos, music)
on my computer, it immediately locks up, and reboots
itself. a week ago i did not have any problems at all.
it started occuring a couple of reboots after i installed
DirectX 9.0a, but i dont think that is the cause, because
last night i completely formatted my C: drive and did a
fresh install of windows, and as soon as i had it
installed, i tried opening one of the videos on my
partitioned media drive, and it immediately froze just as
before (keep in mind that this is using DirectX 8.1
now). I've tried updating my Graphics drivers (Nvidia
GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X) but that just makes things worse,
and then the .gif's on my computer appear with inverse
colors, or are completely blacked out. Sometimes, very
rarely, when i try to play media, my monitor will shut
off, then back on and my graphics will be TOTALLY garbled
and in 640x480 resolution, and an error message pops up
simply stating "the computer has recovered from a serious
error, please reboot your system to correct it." or
something to that effect, but that has only happened 2
times out of the 20 or 30 that i have tried. also, when
i try to run "dxdiag" and test the "Direct Redraw", my
system locks up, and reboots. same with the other Test
on that same tab (i forget whats its called, and if open
it up chances are it may shut my system down) but i tried
before i formatted to decrease my hardware acceleration,
and disabled write combining on my display options, but
neither of those helped any at all. i tried
uninstalling, and reinstalling my graphics card drivers,
that did not help either. i went to the "manage" option
by right clicking "My Computer" and under System Tools >
Event Viewer > Application, i have a couple of errors.
they are as follows:

Fault bucket 28263751.

and

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error
calling routine CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.

The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during
its internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line
44 of d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1
\eventsystemobj.cpp. (i believe this error could be
associated to where i was troubleshooting my modem and
was switching COM ports for it)

but i figured i would paste all of them just to be on the
safe side. PLEASE someone help me with this. it is
EXTREMELY annoying and defeats my daily computing
purposes. i cant even install my audio software and
drivers (SB Audigy) because it creates the sliding
taskbar at the top of my desktop, and my computer will
immediately lock up when i boot up because of it. please
email me, or reply to this with any help or insight you
might be able to give me, it will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you. Oh, my system specs are as follows:

Aopen AX4T-II Motherboard
P4 2.0 GHz
512 RAMBUS mem
72 GB Western Digital HD
GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP8X
SB Audigy
TDK CD-RW
Generic 48x CD-ROM
Windows XP SP1 with all current critical updates
DirectX 8.1 (done tried updating to 9.0a, thats when
problems began)
10/100 Realtek Ethernet Nic

Hi Bill,

A comment not directly related with your problem. You can ignore these
two error log entries (the 8007043C error for COM+ couple with the
0x80040206 error for VSS). These errors are not related with a real
problem - they will always appear together, each time you reboot your
machine in Safe Mode. This problem will be fixed in the future
releases of Windows.

>>> Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine
CoCreateInstance. hr = 0x80040206.

>>> The COM+ Event System detected a bad return code during its
internal processing. HRESULT was 8007043C from line 44 of
d:\nt\com\com1x\src\events\tier1\eventsystemobj.cp p.

thanks for the tip, Adi. ;)

and Jim, i tried re seating my graphics card, and
memory. Neither had any effect on my problem. i suspect
it to be something with my video drivers. i find that i
can play videos when i just have the generic "VGA" driver
adapter installed (after uninstalling my Nvidia drivers)
but that still does not make much sense to me, why
generic drivers will work, and the manufacturer's will
not. i've tried two different sets of drivers, one from
www.nvidia.com and one from where my card was
distributed. neither worked. i even tried getting the
set of drivers which werent the newest (the next ones
down on the list, slightly older ones) and they did not
work either. also, i find when i have these drivers
installed and when i right click on my desktop, my screen
will shut off for a split second, and then come back on.
im stumped. i'd rather fix the problem myself than take
it somewhere and have to pay outrageous service fees for
something that could possibly be a configuration problem
or something of the sort.

i also tried a system diagnostic program that i
downloaded, but, as soon as i clicked on it to start it
up, my system locked up.

any other suggestions? anyone?

Did you test a fan on your Video card? If there is big heat, it can make
your problem.
