XP has become unstable

When starting up, the desktop icons often fail to appear.
There is also no internet connection.If I restart, the
icons come on next time and I can connect straight away.
Have done disk defrag. Have 69% free space. Sometimes the
computer freezes when turning off and i have to turn it
off at the system.
Any ideas anyone?
