I usually view this newsgroup in my web browser. Buy when
I use Outlook Express and NNTP instead, I see many posts
that are "Re:(Subject) and referenced
to ", but can't find the original
postings that they are responses to. Can you please
explain what they are and how I can see the original
postings.

Thanks,
Milt

What news server are you using for with NNTP?

If you are using your ISP's news server then it may be that the posts
in question have been dropped from the server. Most ISPs drop
newsgroup posts after 10 days or so, in order to keep disk space
requirements within reason.

The general concept is that these are *news* groups and one of the
principles of *news* is that "nothing is deader than yesterday's
news".

You could try using msnews.microsoft.com as the NNTP server for these
groups, as they keep ancient history on the server for a longer
period.

If you want to see the original posts for the threads in question you
could try using Google - http://groups.google.com

Best results would probably be achieved by clicking on the Advanced
Groups Search link and specifying the specific newsgroup name and the
actual subject line that you are looking for.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply, Ron.
I don't know how to answer "What news server are you using for
with NNTP". I'm using AOL and reading the "Microsoft.public.windows.basics"
with Outlook Express.

Have you set your news server in OE as msnews.microsoft.com?

Yes "Rifleman", it's set as "msnews.microsoft.com".

Milt,

Outlook Express will pull only so many headers when you access a
newsgroup. I believe the default is 300. When online and you click on a
newsgroup, you will get a list of message headers representing the 300
most recent messages.

If you click on Tools, you will see a menu option "Get Next 300
headers." Click it once and you'll now have 600 headers for the most
recent messages listed in your OE window.

You can keep clicking until you have all of the headers for messages
currently stored on the server for any particular group but be aware
that the results could be thousands and thousands of headers! You may or
may not want *all of them* and will have to decide when enough is
enough.

Personally, I'll sample up to 500 headers for less busy groups and 1000
headers for the busier ones. I've used OE's Tools> Options menus to
change that "300" to "500" to accomodate my preferences. While reading
older posts, new ones will just keep pouring in. As time goes on I'll
have complete threads in the newsreader so I don't worry about those
older incomplete threads too much. Instead I just accept the fact that I
can't read everything (even though I would like to) and try to stay as
current as my time allows in my favorite newsgroups.

Once you've subscribed, any new headers up to the number you've
designated in Tools> Options will be downloaded every time you access
the newsgroup. Filters can also be used on top of the "get headers"
setting. For example, you can use these so that messages that are no
older than 30 days (or less for busier groups) appear in your newsreader
window.

Also be sure you have gone to :
>View>Current View and check that you have chosen Show all
messages(should have a dot in front of it) and also at the bottom choose:
Group messages by conversation.

Hope that helps.

please quote at least some of the post you are replying to so the thread
stays intact.

Thank you.

You can set OE to download them all. Simply uncheck the "Retreive
number of headers" box.
