When customizing the start menu ( simple drag and drop
type stuff) The start menu program items will drag and
drop where you want them. However, once moved all
subdirectory items dissappear and the Item itself becomes
read only. When you try to access it you get an "access
denied". Can Not unselect read only; can not undo, can
not delet. ( yes, I am logged in a Admin.)

The MS book "WIN XP Inside OUT", says this can happen to
task bar items, and that to fix you just unselect read
only. Of course this does not work.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Ian

I recently had a similar start menu problem after reorganising my menu.
Although I don't know why, the following worked for me.
Right click on the start menu directory which is causing the problem and
select properties then click on the sharing tab. Check the "make this folder
private" box then click ok.
On my PC this had the result of making my sub directory programs reappear.
Maybe worth a try.
