With regard to the windows hot fix, Q811493, I am unable
to uninstall mine because I do not have the "remove" tab
available in the "add/remove programs" section. When I
asked the people at the "on line instant support" for HP,
they tell me that everyone of you out there (who own an
HP), who are running windows XP, should do a destructive
recovery, and download nothing after that (none of the
windows updates, that is), untill they release their fix
for the problem.
Now, to me that sounds absolutely absurd. Is there anyone
who can recommend a reasonable fix for this? I just want
to uninstall the hot fix Q811493. I don't want to have to
do a complete destructive system recovery and start all
over again, just to uninstall a windows hot fix. Somebody
sane help me please.

Open XP's System Restore program and select a Restore Point that
was created prior to your problem becoming known.

[Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore]

There is no 'delete or remove tab' You highlite the item you want to delete
then, in a popup menu click the delete button.

'Nicholas' idea of using restore Points in XP is the only 'safe' way to
delete this awful 'hotfix' if you dont have the uninstall showing in Control
Panel. I am further warning you; don't mess with it if it is not in Control
Panel with 'uninstall' (unless the restore Poiint option works, and it
might) I know, i tried it another 'approved' way and blew-out my OS.....

Dave;
I would say the technician is talking out of pure ignorance.
The Critical updates are necessary for the security of the computer.

If such a policy was the official opinion of HP and not just the idea
of an incompetent tech, there would be reference to it somewhere on
the HP website.
Next time ask the tech to give a specific reference.
The tech will not be able to and may start back-pedalling, at that
point ask for a supervisor to complain about unsafe tech support.
