View Full Version : DVD Folder and USB Device File Reading/Burning Errors

Hi,

I have this weird problem on one PC here used for DVD authoring:

We burn DVDs from folders containing our prepared DVD titles, stored on
USB2.0 hard drives. Now, for no apparent reason, the burn process errors out
(Error reading file: I/O error) at random. The USB2.0 drives work
fine at another similar PC in the workplace. The burn process errors occur
randomly for source folders on on-board drives too!

Transfering files to/from any USB unit we have sometimes comes up with the
same error at random.

We tried ripping our own DVDs back to the hard drive - the rip process
itself came up with CRC errors. The discs can, again, be ripped without
error on any other PC. And the discs play perfectly on regular DVD players.

Sometimes this PC cannot read DVDs created by itself - CRC errors. But they
play fine (PowerDVD) on the PC as well as on any regular DVD player. The
errors follow no pattern that can be discerned. The USB2.0 units here work
fine on any other PC for the same files!

This one is baffling in its randomness. The error only happens with DVDs. We
tried using other burning software - the inhouse authoring and burning
software is Sony DVD Architect. Roxio and Nero give the same errors, but for
completely different source files!

I shall be grateful for any pointers on where to look. The problem seems,
for now, to be associated only with DVD files and the burning process.

This PC has two DVD drive's - one a DVD-ROM and the other a DVD+R Writer.
The error in ripping our own DVD occurs on either drive, both being less
than six months old.

The I/O error occurs if we try to simply copy a (large) VOB file directly
from the DVD to the hard drive. Sometimes the process ends with a CRC error.
The error never occurs twice at the same position in copying any file on
either device.

For me, this only adds to my complete befuddlement.

Thanks a lot in anticipation.

Lucifer

PS: The PC has been thoroughly checked for spyware and worms and viruses -
Norton, MS Anti-Spyware, AdAware, Spybot. SFC /Scannow was completed also.
So was CHKDSK and Norton. Nothing detected at all. This PC is completely
up-to-date with all updates installed.

PPS: This is being reposted at the suggestion of a responder whoo said I
might get a better response if the heading were reworded. Thanks. This
repost includes the addenda.

He was not able to come out to help. He's laid up with gonorrhea at the
moment. Some scum gave it to him, as I understand.

New Drives? Do they have the correct firmware version for the media you're
using?

Just a thought........

Hi,

Try update the firmware, it may help but must be very careful as an improper
update of firmware may kill your burner.

Thanks for the responses about the firmware. Both the drives have the latest
firmware installed. I visited the manufacturer's websites and confirmed
this.

Actually the PC was working fine earlier. I regret I did not make this clear
in my original posting. I was very confused by what was happening as we were
in the midst of completing a project. We are now completing the project
having made arrangements to use the workplace PC over the weekend.

We have also decided to create a Norton Disk image of the problem PC's
system drive, and stored off-computer (just in case). Then that PC would
have all software and devices reinstalled and the OS updated.

Somebody locally mentioned about a somewhat similar problem and that was
traced to the fact that after installing an update (he could not remember
which), the DVD authoring process resulted in 1GB VOB files instead of the
standard 0.99GB size. He was able to get over this by using a freeware DVD
ripper to do a 1:1 transcoded copy of the prepared files and get the correct
sized VOBs! He reported no problems after that, temporarily! He simply
reinstalled everything and the problem was gone. Never found out what caused
it, though.

PowerDVD installs a driver for a USB connected remote control, even if
you don't have one. Try disabling it by running msconfig, and uncheck
the box on the Startup tab for PDVDServ.exe.
