View Full Version : Install Help

It turns out that my friend’s copies of XP Pro are pirated. This is new to me.
Now the question is; could an unregistered / pirated copy of XP deny an installation of printer drivers or any other software installs? Is that possible and is that why I haven’t been able to do an install of the installation software for the HP PhotoSmart 7760? Does it need to be a legitimate copy? Does he need to shell out some bucks for a licensed copy?
Thanks for any help
Bart
PS, no it isn't my copy of XP, it really is a friends.

Q: "Does he need to shell out some bucks for a licensed copy?".
A: Your friend needs to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and proceed with a "Repair Install". There is zero (0) support for pirated and
illegal software!

Carey,
Thanks for the info, I understand what you’re saying, but my question remains. Has Uncle Bill and his allies, HP, decided to make it so that certain software, drivers, won’t load if the copy ain’t legit? I’ve been working on his PC for two days now and I’m grasping at straws trying to figure out why some HP printer drivers refuse to load. That’s why I’m asking.

There is no way of telling if the pirated version has all the
proper Windows XP files intact. That is why it is essentially
a waste of time attempting to troubleshoot a pirated copy.
My guess is the pirated copy is corrupt. The installation of an authentic,
genuine version of Windows XP will should fix the problem.

I have just bought a brand new computer from Gateway, it contains WinXP Pro
SP2 and I have tried not only the original HP disks but the latest and
greatest download from HP. It still will not install. after copy about 64%
of the files it stops with this window popup that says Setup Error: the
installation has caused a severe error which requires the system to be
rebooted. restart and try reinstalling.
I have not found anything on the HP website, can you suggest anything
further that I try?

Whatever HP disks you have, they will not work on a Gateway PC
as they are likely to be licensed strictly for use on a HP PC.

Would I have only one Gateway PC I would tell you, HHmmm that's probably it.
In this case all my PCs are Gateway, Most of them are running WinXP Pro SP1,
and some I have installed SP2--All of them have the HP Printer driver in
question from the same HP disk in question. There are just these two new
machines from Gateway that came with WinXP Pro SP2 that have this problem
when I try to install the drivers. I could try Safe mode with networking and
try to install it that way? what else can I try?
