View Full Version : problems with Sony Vaio and XP

I just upgraded my 2 year old Sony laptop FX140 series
from ME to XP. My computer works fine, EXCEPT for the VAIO
Action Setup component (self-analysis of computer
problems). Sony says that I cannot use this feature with
XP, so I want to eliminate this feature from my computer.
Or, at the very least, inactivate the message about a
missing file when my computer boots. My computer opens XP,
I get to desktop, and then during the startup programs, it
shows the message about "It can't start because an
establishment file doesn't exist." If I shut the window
down, everything works fine. I have tried to go into
Startup to find the Vaio action setup file to remove from
start up, but I cannot figure out how to do this in XP.

Can you please help me on this? The previous e-mail from
SONY (see below) was of NO USE at all to me. I understand
all of the warnings: basically, they are saying that they
do not recommended upgrading from ME to XP, and if I do it
they are not responsible for any help to me at all..

Thanks,
Jackie Reynolds

Thank you for contacting SONY Online Support.

Each VAIO computer is designed specifically to work with
the SONY OEM version of Windows pre-installed from the
factory. However, SONY is committed to developing device
drivers, software updates and system utilities for use with
our VAIO computers manufactured after September 1, 2000*
under Microsoft's Windows eXPerience (XP). These device
drivers and/or software updates will be available on your
model specific support website when released:

http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/

NOTE: SONY does not and can not warrant that all original
system features and software will be available under the
Windows XPenvironment unless an update is specifically
provided through SONY on your model-specific support site.

NOTE: The VAIO System, Application and Driver Recovery
CD(s) that shipped with your model are designed for use
with the SONY pre-installed OEM version of Windows only.
They will NOT work under the retail Windows XP environment.
The Recovery CD(s)released with our Windows XP models can
NOT be used with those models that did not ship
pre-installed with Windows XP and are not for sale. SONY
has not developed, and is not in the process of releasing
Windows XP based System or Application Recovery CDs for use
with your non-Windows XP VAIO model.

NOTE: SONY does not recommend or support an upgrade path to
Microsoft's Windows XP Professional operating system for
VAIO PCs originally shipped with the Windows 95/98/98SE or
ME environment. Currently Windows XP Professional upgrades
are only supported for systems pre-installed with Windows
2000 Professional or XP Home Editions.

Both Microsoft and SONY do not support an upgrade
from Windows 2000 Professional to Windows XP Home Edition.

NOTE: SONY offers no warranty assistance, support or
troubleshooting for the installation, configuration, or
hardware compatibility issues for Microsoft's Windows
eXPerience (XP) operating system on VAIO models
manufactured prior to September 1, 2000. All technical
support for the retail Windows XP product is handled
through Microsoft.

Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Message : I just installed XP (ME came with my machine
when I bought it a few years ago). When I re-boot computer
now, it says there is an error with Vaio action setup, and
to re-install. And when I click on that option under
Program list, it says error with server (even tho I am
connected). I have already downloaded recommended XP
drivers and such from your website, but not addressed this
problem. OBviously there is some upgrade for this feature
that I need. If I just close the error window, the machine
works fine. I figure there must be some reason that I need
that Vaio action setup tow ork, at a future date, perhaps.

Recent Vaio installations have this as an application that is in Control
Panel/Add Remove Programs, but it is part of the OEM XP install. There
is also a Sony SPTI Service in Services, but again it is an OEM XP
install. Apparently, you installed over your OEM ME install? Check
add/remove anyway to see if the program is there and can be removed.

Check Run msconfig and see if the app is starting here. If you cannot
figure out which app it is, you can go to this site to help identify
startup apps:

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm#Select

Also, check the Start/All programs/startup folder for a shortcut to the
app. Typically, the app will be found with msconfig so what you see
here might be redundant.
