Windows XP Maintenance Procedures



1. Manually Clean Out Temp Files. Go to start/run and type in: %temp% Click
ok. Delete all visible items. Clean out weekly. Applies to Win
95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



2. Defrag Hard Drive weekly with Diskeeper. Available for a fee at
www.diskeeper.com Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



3. Remove Record of Recently Accessed Files. Go to start/settings/task bar
and start menu/select start menu tab/click customize and click clear - then
click ok/ok. Perform daily. Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



4. Run Check Disk. Go to my computer: right click C:/drive and click
properties. Under tools tab select error checking and click check now.
Select both options and click start. At the message screen click yes to
start at next boot up and then click ok. Go to start/shut down and select
restart. The Check Disk Utility will run when the computer restarts. Perform
monthly. Applies to Win 2000/XP



5. If available (Norton System Works 2003) Run Norton’s “One Button Check
Up” Click “begin check up.” Perform monthly. Applies to Win 2000/XP



6. If available Run Ad aware 6 Free download available at www.lavasoft.nu to
remove spy ware. Perform Weekly. Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



7. Clean Temporary Internet Files. Go to start/settings/control
panel/internet options. Click delete cookies and then click ok. Click delete
files and check delete off line content and click ok. Click the delete
history tab to remove the history and record of any recently viewed
websites. Perform weekly. Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



8. Download the latest critical system updates, service packs and drivers
for your computers software and hardware at Windows Update. In IE, go to
tools/windows update and follow the instructions. Check monthly or set to
download updates automatically. Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP


9. RegCleaner is an easy to use registry cleaner program. With RegCleaner

Microsoft Outlook Express Maintenance



1. Open Outlook Express. Go to tools/options/maintenance. Click clean up
now. Click compact. If you have viewed any news groups - click reset.
Perform weekly and when not on the internet. Applies to Win
95/98SE/ME/2000/XP



2. Download and install Zone Alarm an internet firewall. Available for free
at www.zonelabs.com Applies to Win 95/98SE/ME/2000/XP
