View Full Version : multiple can of worms now on new computer

I am a home user with WinXP Home on a new-ish Dell, which
used to work fine. Dell had installed a trial-period
McAfee, and I wanted to put on my new retail Norton's
SystemWorks instead. I uninstalled McAfee via control
panel/remove programs. Seemed to uninstall ok. I inserted
the SystemWorks CD and during the install got some
installation error messages, so uninstalled SystemWorks.
[I had just the day before installed a retail SystemWorks
on my mom's computer with no hitch.) I may have tried to
install again with the same result, so uninstalled
again.

THEN, I'm finding that Windows is now 'funny'. Don't
remember all the symptoms, but trying to bring up 'help
and support' brought up only a white box, other things
not working properly. Got hold of Dell and after a long
process/several calls they had me run a defrag (was
short, didn't make any difference). Then a Windows
Repair. (I wish I remember how they had me do
it...booting from the Windows CD, the computer wanted a
password [but there IS no password] and they were able to
go to repair some other way around the non-existent
password..I would like to know how for future
reference.] After the repair was done, I was able to
install SystemWorks seemingly fine.

EXCEPT, now I have lost my internet connection. Windows
appears to be 'funny' still, in different ways, as
the 'add new connection' wizard' does not work properly
[only broadband choice is available, others greyed out],
system restore is not accessible [error
message: 'runndll32.exe-entry point not found....the
procedure entry point remote assistance
PrepareSystemRestore could not be located in dynamic link
library WINSTA.dll]Who knows what else is wrong.

SO, sorry for the tome..DELL has just referred me to
their pay-for software support since they seem to be
tired of hearing from me, I am left with no way to
connect, and I think Windows is messed up. All I was
trying to do is get rid of their expiring McAfee and put
on my Norton's. I would run a Windows Repair again if I
remembered how to get around the non-existent password,
or I would try a system restore is I could GET to it. Or
I would do a clean install (groan) but in the pile of
install/driver CDs I got with this, I have visions of a
bigger mess. I thought I was relatively computer
literate, but I guess not. Please help, getting
desperate.
