Assuming you're on XP Pro...

There's two steps.

Step 1 is to turn off the Welcome screen and use the
NT4/2000 logon box. Open Control Panel->User Accounts,
and uncheck the box for Use the Welcome Screen.

Note that you cannot use Fast User Switching once you
turn off the welcome screen.

Step 2 is to launch the Group Policy Editor (Start-
>Run, "gpedit.msc"

Expand Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security
Settings, Local Policies, and click Security Options.

Find "Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name",
double-click it, change to Enabled.

Every Windows XP computer has an Administrator user name. With that
name one does not need to know any other user names. One does not
have to guess the name. You should rely upon strong passwords to
protect your computer and not hidden user names.

Earl,

I agree. I have set the Administrator up with a strong and long password.
(No one actually uses that logon.) I just want to prevent guests in my house
from even being tempted to to login. Why give them half the key?

I guess I can always turn on the BIOS level password protection, too.

Thanks.

You can also rename the Administrator account.
I would also agree that you need to use strong passwords,
but you seem to have that covered.
