Automatic Window Update

I just hooked up my PC to the internet and tried to
activate the automatic version update for Windows XP Home
Edition. When the window opens and I select Scan for
Updates the process starts and then stops and keeps
starting and stopping. Never gets past 0% of the scan.

Any ideas on how to solve this??
