I have had several problems with my laptop locking up
after downloading critical windows xp home updates. I do
not know which update is causing the problem and Compaq
has no record of it.

Mark;
Compaq will have no record of it because you installed the update.
Look in "C:\Windows\Windows Update.log" to see what was most recently
installed.
Then go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

There can be many causes of lock-ups.
Heat can cause lock-ups as well as bad drivers and others.

Check to make sure all fans are running
Power supply always has a fan, CPU and video card often have a fan.
Make sure all vents are clear and case is unobstructed on all sides,
especially front and back.

Make sure you have the latest drivers.
