View Full Version : Task Manager using 100% CPU

Everything was fine when I turned my computer off and the
next morning when I turned it on it took nearly two hours
to boot up.

I removed everything from start up but, XP still takes
over 30 minutes to boot-up, and once up, everything is
EXTREMELY slow; pressing Start button takes 2-3 minutes
to show start menu.

With no applications running, in the task manager window,
taskmgr.exe is using 100% CPU.

I have XP Home that came installed on my HP Pavilion 325N.

I ran virus scan with up-to-date Norton 2002 and spyware
removal (SpyBot).

I DO NOT have SP1 or Q811493 installed. Indexing is
turned off.

I am at wits end... any ideas other than tossing the
thing in the trash?

Out of curiousoty, if you eliminated all programs from the HD but XP, why
would you not just reinstall the operating system. Many times you can
reinstall the OS without losing saved HD data. As long as you do not format
the disk. I would try this first to see if it will fix the problem.

I didn't eliminate anything from the hard drive, only
from Windows start up because Norton and other programs
took over 2 hours to load when booting up.

Can't re-install because PC came with XP already
installed but crappy PC didn't come with any software CDs
and I ABSOLUTELY refuse to go out and buy XP.

My computer(HP) didn't come with restore CD's either, I had to call to have
them mailed to me. Cost ten dollars. I imagine any of the computer companies
will send them. Not as good as a clean install but not $200.00 or $100.00
upgrade either. Worked fine for complete restore, don't know how it is on
repair. Hope this helps a little.
