View Full Version : Windows File Protection - which file???

Hey all!

Over the last few days I've had the "Windows File Protection" window
pop up at boot, asking for my Windows XP CD. The only thing I've done
with the PC is install MS Publisher 2002, MS Project 2002 and MS
Frontpage 2002, plus the MS Office updates available on the web.

If these programs did alter the Windows files, should Windows be smart
enough to know not to put them back to the original files?

I can't be sure that this is what Windows wants to restore as there is
no way of finding out WHICH files Windows things are wrong.

Is there a way to tell what files Windows wants to restore from my
Windows XP CD?

Thanks!

Go to Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter. In the resulting
Command Prompt window, type: SFC /SCANNOW , and hit enter.
You may be prompted to insert your Windows CD in the CD Drive.

SFC =3D System File Checker. SFC will scan your system and replace =
missing
or damaged XP system files with the correct version.

That's not the problem.

When it finds a damaged/different file, how do >>I<< know what file
it's replacing?

Of course you do realize that once you run the SFC /SCANNOW you have
to go do ALL of your Windows Updates and Service packs again.

No, using SFC does not cause you to reinstall service
packs and updates. It does not replace updated file
versions with older file versions.

Actually, even the Microsoft site says you need to reinstall the
updates.

If I can find the link (fat chance on Microsofts support site) I'll
post it.

I may have mixed up the File Protection in ME with XP. Reading the
docs online agrees with what you are saying.

I still don't trust it though, as it won't tell me what files it's
updating.

I have used the SFC procedure several times and never
had a problem with it displacing any updated files with
older versions.

It wont tell you because it doesn't want users who don't know what every
file does to get worried. You cannot see which file it is and there is
really no need to. If there is a file difference you should let XP fix it.

I assume that when you take your car to the garage and the mechanic
says, "something is wrong" that you don't ask what it is? You just
tell him to fix it?

I installed an MS product. After reboot, XP wants to restore a file.
Considering that I installed Publisher 2002, I want to know what file
Publisher 2002 would have that is older than my XP CD. Then I
installed the Office Updates and again, XP wants to restore a file.

What file on the Office Updates yesterday would be OLDER than the
files on the original XP CD?

If the system is going to warn me about damaged files, I want to know
which ones so I can avoid the problem.
