Which codec/format for archiving?

The DV-AVI files from my camcorder chew up 12 GB of disk space or more,
depending on length. After creating movies and burning them to DVD, I want
to archive the files to data DVDs for future use. The DV-AVI format is too
large. I tried converting a 20 min. test video to WMF using Windows Movie
Maker and to MPEG-2 using ULead DVD MovieFactory. The WMF file is only 245
MB. The MPEG-2 file is 1.21 GB. Any recommendations for using one of these,
or some other format, for archiving with an eye toward using them again on
future projects? Thanks.

If you want to use it again it has to be dv-avi, use minidv tape and archive
it back to this using the camcorder. Any compressed format loses quality adn
loses it again when converted again. Mpeg's can only be edited at i frmaes
which can be as far apart as 2 seconds or more depending on the parameters
used........
