I want to take full advantage of XGA resolution on PCs and produce and play
video with 4x3 aspect ratio and true 960 H by 720 V resolution (e.g., no
letterbox).

I can shoot the video in 720p -24, 16x9 with a viewfinder mask that blocks
off the sides so that the relevant video is within the 4x3 aspect ratio area.
It will be uncompressed and deliverable as HD-SDI video.

Can I use something like a Folsom Research device to impose 4x3 aspect ratio
(e.g, chop off left and right excess width), and then encode/compress that
video into WMV-HD and display the resultant video using Windows Media Player
10 to achieve my objective? Given the overall complexity, I'd be amazed if
it was that simple.

But surely this has come up before. If not with WMV-HD is there any other
approach? I'm willing to add software and/or hardware in the PC so long as
the additional cost is in the $100 range per PC/laptop.
