My 6 month old Sony PCG FXA32 notebook PC hangs something
like you describe. It was a very smooth system until 2
wks ago I Windows Upgraded 15 criticals, Service Pack 1,
etc. I have tried to Restore with no noteable
improvement.
Incidently, I also changed C: boot drive from FAT32 to
NTFS filesystem.
=>and now the symptoms are:
[1] I can always boot and log on, also can connect to
corporate ethernet account and email, but afer awhile the
mouse, screen, kyboard locks and freezes hard.
[2] The most obvious symptom is the hard disk LED goes
100% inactive, because normally it lights on and off
regularly.
[3] The only solution is to hold down the power button
for 10 secs until the PC switches off hard ie "click -
OFF".
[4]One symptom: before my recent upgrade, the power up
sequence used to have a light blue "XP will check your
disks because you didn't power down nicely" screen but
now this never comes up - the PC always comes up as if no
problem had occurred.
[5] the hang is random between 30 secs to 30 minutes or
so. It seems to hang somewhat more when Outlook97 email
is logged on and running. Running other Office97 tools
like Excel or Word seem to run longer between these
lockups.
[6] the rear fan blows normally
Suggestions?
