Has it every occurred to you to try a little initiative and do a Google search
for the answer? Never mind, I did and found many responses, here's one:

BIGFIX, INC. - SECURITY CONFIGURATION MANAGEMENT - VULNERABILITY MANAGEMENT -

My thoughts exactly. The very large number of posts in this NG means
that many worthy questions go unanswered because "some" Users fail 101
Self-Help.

Excuse us, but you did ask "What exactly is Big Fix?" giving us the
impression you had no idea what it was. Using this premise as a base, we
figured if you knew what it was, then you could answer the second half of
your question "and is it something I want to use or not?" by making an
educated decision once you knew what is was.
Don't blame us for not being ESP experts, having Crystal Balls or
practicing Tarot. We can't read minds, so yes, netiquette 101 applies, and
you were guilty of not providing the information.
So who was RUDE, responded IRRATIONALLY, and needs to GROW UP and
definitely needs to attend/practice ANGER management. No one even mentioned
posting in all CAPS is considered EXTREMELY RUDE and INSULTING as it is
considered YELLING.
Lastly, we do enjoy life, as we answer these questions on a volunteer
basis (you don't think MicroSoft pays people to do it do you?), and didn't
see one NASTY opinion in the bunch, well, yes, YOUR UGLY RESPONSES.

Oh, one last item, you need to learn how to "munge" your true email address,
such as " or something to the like, as
all newsgroups have many automated bots harvesting email addresses for
"spammers". Munging allows the bots to harvest them, but unless human
intervention (educated guessing) is applied, the harvested address becomes
worthless, especially true since these bots havest millions of addresses,
which no spammer is going to physically review each address for obvious
munging.

Just because I posted a question, why the anger and sarcastic replies.
Yeah, I think I know Microsoft doesn't pay you - your insults are not
necessary nor appreciated.
I never asked you to be an "expert", so please read the emails more
carefully. You think my response was ugly, would you care to read the
responses of Byte and yourself. You threw the first stone, so don't get all
bent out of shape if someone throws back. I might not know all about the
internet, but you sure as heck don't intimidate me or prevent me from
posting on newsgroups.

You are using Oultook Express. Your email address is .
You posted from IP 24.11.69.170 This and more is available in the headers of
your post. Spammers harvest email addresses from newsgroups. You will
probably be receiving much more spam at that address shortly. In Outlook
Express under the account settings for the news server don't use your real
email address. use something like Star Fleet Admiral Q suggested. Anyone who
takes the time will be able to figure out what it really is if they want to
contact you. Spambots (programs to harvest email addresses) will be fooled.

Thanks Kerry for your explanation. I really appreciate it. I went under
accounts and couldn't find where I set up my email address. I didn't
actually set it up to begin with. The guy who set up my computer at
Christmas did it, so I am not familiar with the addresses. If you have the
time, I would appreciate it if you would explain how to do that. Do I then
get rid of the hotmail account?

No, you keep the hotmail account if you still want to receive mail there.
You only change it in the account properties for news servers so that the
munged version shows up in the header. In Outlook Express From the Tools
Menu click on Accounts, click on the News tab and highlight the news account
you want to munge, click on the Properties button, In the E-Mail Address box
munge your address.

You know, I got to thinking, I don't even have a hotwire account. I think
the guy just set it up for outlook express. The only two places I go for
mail is yahoo and aol and neither of them end in hotmail. So would this
still be a problem? Thanks.

Not a problem for you but it is a problem for Microsoft. Spammers will send
mail to that address. The hotmail servers will waste time trying to resolve
the address. Also because hotmail is so popular that may be someone else's
address. You should always munge the part after the @. It's just good
manners when using news groups.
