When I try to hibernate, the cpu wakes itself up and gives me the API error
as outlined in the above link.

I am on an xp pro SP2 system with 3 mb ram.

I've recently begun experiencing the identical error on my HP ZT3000 laptop,
after upgrading from 512MB to 1.5GB. This laptop is running Windows XP Pro
with SP2. Microsoft's Q330909 knowledge base article is most definitely
incorrect in its claim that the issue is fixed with SP2. I'm surprised that
nothing has been done to fix this, as Microsoft has to know that this problem
still exists.

The name of that file is misleading. The hotfix will install only if no
service pack has been installed. There is no hotfix available for SP1 or SP2.

FWIW, this problem is not tied to laptops or Compaq or IBM or anything else
other than Microsoft Windows XP! I have two desktop systems, both with more
than 1 Gb of RAM, both custom built from top-of-the-line (at the time)
components (but very few common components between the systems -i.e.
different MB, processors, memory,...) yet they both exhibit this problem. The
only group which will be able to fix this problem is Microsoft.

I wouldn't mind it happening quite so much if the system reported the
failure to Microsoft every time it happened (like it can do with application
crashes) 'cause at least that way I know they would be reminded of it (and
hopefully annoyed by it, even slightly) every time it happened.

Hi to All,

i have the same problem on my Dell Latitude d800 mit XP SP 2 and all actual
Patches

since i upgraded to more than 1 GB (actual 2 GB)!

The real strange thing is this:

i put my notebook into hibernate mode.
For about 15-30 minutes it is in hibernate mode BUT THEN it resumes ITSELF
and pops up with
"ufficient system resources exist to complete the API"

this dosent happen all the time, it is not predictable when it will behave
like described.

It´s extremly dangerous when the notebook resumes in the notebook bag after
30 minutes.
Overheating the system, maybe even fire etc.

This really annoying

seems like you need to have a look at your BIOS. There might be somekind of
"wake-up" settings. But of course, if it's in a bag this might not be the
issue.

checked all those BIOS settings already and also talked to DELL support.

The issue you describe is probably caused by memory fragmentation,
unfortunatley at present there is no fix for this from MS.

I have recently logged a call with PSS on this very problem, the
engineer provided me the following troubleshooting steps, the Q330909
article was updated because of my call (and recent calls on this issue)

I would strongly encourage you to log this with PSS - it should be a
free call as there is currently no resolution, you will need to go
through the troubleshooting steps they provide to prove it is related
to memory fragmentation, rather than a driver/3rd party software issue

if you email me offline (simon dot gallagher at ioko dot com) I can
provide you with the reference # for my call - this may help them
investigate the issue and cross reference it.

This is the only way this issue will be moved up Microsoft's priority
list as at present only a small minority of people log this issue yet
an increasing number of people with this configuration will experience
it.


The steps MS provided to narrow down this issue are as follows; (MS
have ok'd this being published

A generic list of steps to troubleshoot to narrow down the issue would
be as follows:



- Remove any synchronization software for Palm such as Sony
Clie SL10 syncing software, ActiveSync, HotSync, Autosync, etc. If you
installed such programs, please temporarily uninstall them.

- Install SP2 for Windows XP which includes:

- Install the following hotfix to upgrades the version of the
HAL:

Hardware (DEP)-enabled computer may unexpectedly quit after you resume
from standby or from hibernation in Windows XP Service Pack 2

- Use the following boot.ini entry "MAXMEM 1024" to limit
the memory available to the operating system. If the issue continues
to occur with this limitation in place we may have a different issue.

- Be aware that certain applications can cause more memory
fragmentation than others, depending on the way they are designed to
use memory.

- An occasional reboot (although not a solution) should reduce
the occurrence of the issue.
