I am using windows XP with a plain old 2 button mouse
with scroll wheel. Without any warning the mouse cursor
will "float" across the screen on it's own. Sometime
left, right up or down. It will not stop till is gets to
the end of the screen. Already tried new mouse.
Any suggestions ?

But what happened when you tried the new mouse? What brand mice are they?
Are they optical? Probably you just need to update a driver.

Tom,
I have the same problem but haven't figured it out either. I have a Dell
that I purchased a year ago and Dell has no ideas and I can't seem to get
any results from Microsoft. It doesn't happen all the time but when it does
it's annoying.
If anyone wants a crack at it, it's a Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.3A PS/2
Compatible 5V 20mA non optical (ball) non wireless (wired) setup.
There are 2 driver files reported in Device Manager, "i8042prt.sys" and
"mouclass.sys" and both are version number "5.1.2600.1106
(xpsp1.020828-1920)" Digitally signed by "Microsoft Windows XP Publisher"
I've looked all over Microsoft's web site but can't find any updated drivers
for it as there seems to be no later ones and there are no articles in the
Knowledge Base.
Anyone else want to take a shot at this?

I have had these kind of probs for quite a while. First with Win98 and a
Asus M/board which was suss. Now I have had the mouse going haywire with a
new M/b and chip, running XP pro. In both cases the solution for me has been
to dump the PS2 mouse and use a ordinary serial mouse.
That is with both M/bs, Win98 and now XP, various PS2 mice, all have played
up until I switched to a serial mouse.
Regards
Dave.
