I would like to make an image file to backup my PC, how
can I make such a file. Can this type of file restore my
PC in case of a problem?

Stéphane, A solid procedure for doing this is Powerquest's Drive Image:
http://www.powerquest.com/driveimage/
(this one will back up to a network drive or Zip's or CD-R/RW's and
allow you to restore from a pair of bootable diskettes. The restore can
be either the bit-for-bit drive image, or any combination of files/folders.)
Another similar, but not identical product is Norton Ghost:
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/ghost/ghost_personal/
(This one allows backup to home network IP, USB, or parallel connection
as well as CD/DVD R/RW).
