How to stop unwanted programs starting up at boot up.

How do I keep programs from starting when I boot up.
Please don't send me to that 'console' thing. I just
want to keep a program from placing its invasive icon in
my task bar.

Look at each program to see if it has an option not to start
automatically. If it doesn't, you can disable it by running
MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line.
