View Full Version : No Back-up tool on my new Sony Vaio!
Val
December 11th 03, 09:54 PM
I just bought a new Sony Vaio and just realized they do
not provide an XP CD with their computers! The Back-up
tool is not installed on my computer and I found out that
it is not installed during the default installation of XP
but you can install it from the CD if you have one. I
don't think it is right that I paid so much for this
computer that has XP Home edtion installed and I don't
have a CD! Anyone know what I can do about this?

By default, the backup program is not installed in XP home edition. However,
it should be on your hard disk. I don't have a SONY but had exactly the same
situation. (no CD and backup not installed) . Click on help and support,
search for backup, and see if there are instructions for installing it.

Many OEMs choose not to supply optional components.
NTBACKUP is optional in Windows XP Home, that is why it is in the
"VALUEADD" folder.

it.

Val;
There is nothing you can do...except buy a Dell or other computer that
gives you what you want.
For several years, some computer companies have been moving away from
CDs (HP, Sony and possibly others)
Microsoft states that only a method to restore the computer needs to
be provided.
If you do not have a CD, you should have a Restore partition on the
hard drive.
Check the manual for details.
Sony will probably sell you the CD, my guess is <$20.
I would get the CD, sooner or later you will need the CD, and you
would not have to wait if you already had the CD.
Let Sony know what you feel about this.

Actually most OEM's do not include it.
