Troubleshooting problems with IE 6 in SystemXP

I recently installed the dictation and speech option in Microsoft Word
2003.
Until that installation IE6 worked perfectly. Now I can only launch
IE through the "Run as" option under the icon which doesn’t allow me
to store Favorites or download programs. Short of taking the entire
Word program off the computer I can’t figure out how to uninstall the
dictation and speech option. I did uncheck the Microsoft Office in
the start up programs but this did not help in loading IE.
I did run Norton Antivirus as soon as I detected this problem
-indicated no viruses. Around 24 later it started notifying me that
my computer was infected with a Trojan Horse. I now have 6 files
quarantened - four of which are from System 32. None of this 4 files
can be found either on the System XP installation file or on my laptop
which has the same system as the affected computer. In included
hidden files in the search.
Last night I ran the Registry Editor to scan and fix windows file.
It didn’t help either. The next step is probably reinstalling
Internet Explorer but I am reluctant to do that yet until I am sure
there is no conflict with the Microsoft Word addition. Any
suggestions?

First, be certain all virii / trojans/malware are cleaned up. Has the =
last run of NAV shown everything clean?

Are you on XP with Service Pack 2? so that your IE should be at SP2 =
level?

It's just possible the Word option overlayed 1 or more DLL files. A IE =
reinstall should clear it up.

I'd suggest running XP's System File Checker. Place your XP CD in the =
CDROM drive. (If setup pops-up just close (exit) that window).
From XP menus, select "Command Prompt". (or from Run menu, type
CMD <enter>

in the command prompt window type
SFC /SCANNOW <enter>

That would get System File Checker running, and recheck your versions of =
Windows system files

Hopefully that would solve your problem.

The last run of NAV shows everything is clean.
My IE is at SP2 level.
Actually last night I read the article you mentioned (How to Reinstall
or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP) and
don’t quite get it.
I understand the part about altering the registry but not the part
about reinstalling IE. Do I just open the XP install disc, open it to
custom install, and then select IE? Then what do I do about the SP2
disc? Does it have a custom install too?
Today I tried running IE using AOL instead of my server wesnet. EI
still won’t launch from the e symbol but worked fine when I launched
it from an AOL find. It also runs well from "run as administrator"
now that I figured out how to add a password to Administrator.

I appreciate your input about XP System File Checker. Actually I ran
XP’s System File Checker last night before posting my first note. I
never really got any confirmation that it had changed any files but
did run it until the thermometer filled to the end and the program
stopped. I continued to have the problem with EI after running it.
