my system32.exe file has been infected with a trojan; i
put it in quarantine with mcafee virus scan but now an
error message comes up everytime i log in. What is the
importance of this file and is there anyway to disinfect
or replace it?

ben,
That file is a virus. This should solve your problem;
1. Click Start, and click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Navigate to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
4. In the right pane, delete the value
System32 C:\Windows\System32.exe
or
System32 C:\Winnt\System32.exe
5. Navigate to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\
Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
6. In the right pane, double-click each of the following values and change them to the preferred settings:
RegisteredOwner
RegisteredOrganization
7. Click Registry, and then click Exit to save the changes.
