If I run SPF /Checknow, after an initial "Wizard" file
it prompts me for a CD containing the SP1 files.
As my SP1 was installed from the hard disk, I can't
satisfy this request.
Is there a way of advising SPF to "go and look here"

Here is a guide that will allow you to build a "slipstream" WindowsXP SP1a
disk. I have done it and it is great. I just did a reformat an clean
install on 2 of my 4 machines using the CD I created using the techniques
described on this page.
Here is the link;

Very nice, but surely there ought to be a way of getting
the utility to prick up the existing install/SP files on
the HDD, especially if they were used for the initial
setup & subsequent upgrades.
You solution is a bit like popping off to an oil refinery
every time you want to buy petrol for the car

Odd. The system ought to know it was installed from HD. I assume you mean
you first copied the entire contents of \i386 from the CD to the HD and then
installed from there?
Anyway, I thought you got a "browse" button when running sfc to specify a
location (I'm at work on a Win2K machine now). If not, try checking what Win
XP thinks your installation source really was. Open regedit, then:
HKLM>software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\setup
The "SourcePath" key should point to the HD i386 folder from which you ran
the install. If not, edit the path and keep your fingers crossed!

The OP wanted to know how he could set the pointer to the files in SP1a and
not on the original WinXP disc.
