98 SE vs. XP SP2

For general home use, Surfing, a few games and E-mail, which is the better
system ? I had 98SE, went on to XP,now I cant even use half of my CD
software. Just a general Question.

Hands down, XP is the better OS for any surfing or email
since it is being updated for security. It is also more
stable and rarely (really never) crashes.

What CD software can't you run?

The best would seem to be dependant on it doing what you want. Only you know
which that is, and what those (secret) things you want to do.

There are differences between the OS, and different opinions on them but you
have posted in an XP group- you can probably expect most to say XP with the
usual few Apple is best people.

For almost anything, Windows XP is much the better operating
system. It's most stable, and gets fixed for security exposures
that get found (older operating systems often don't).

The only respect in which an older operating system might be
preferable is if you had older software that you had to or wanted
to run, and it wasn't compatible with XP. Even there, it's often
worth replacing that software with newer versions that will run
under XP.

You say "now I cant [sic] even use half of my CD software," but
you haven't provided any specifics about what software you can't
run or what happens when you try.

Best would be the one that does what YOU want. Apparently for YOU that's not
XP.

FWIW I am still running Windows 98SE at home because of compatability issues
with older software. As always there are tradeoffs. For example some newer
software will not run on Windows 98 (I want Google Earth at home). Out of
the box Windows 98SE is more secure as there are no open ports and thus it
doesn't require a firewall. Of course if you turn on file sharing or other
network services a firewall is recommended. XP tends to be more stable than
Windows 98 and doesn't have the resource issues that that operating system
has. I generally prefer XP (that's what I use at work) but with my older
hardware/software at home I plan to stick with 98 for as long as I can hold
out.

For getting from my house to the grocery store, which is better, a 1986
plymouth duster, or a 2005 Rolls?

Answer is they will both get you there, but only one in style with less
chance of a break down.

Windows 98 is better for games but most new hardware
comes out in xp only versions so eventually you want have a choice. PLay
98se when you can and win xp when you must.

You hit the nail right on the head.

IF, you already have 98SE OS configured correctly, good firewall/AV, all the
3rd party apps working great, there is no need to change. Changing to XP
will, however, satisfy your curiosity. Results may be better, worse, or
indifferent to your result for others. But the premise doesn't change,
there's no need to change under the circumstances you're providing.

However, if you're starting from scratch, no OS installed. And, you've
checked the hardware and 3rd party software operability for XP concerning
your PC is okay. Go with XP.
