View Full Version : ScanDisk/ChkDsk/Error Check Hangs on Completion?

I'm running Windows XP Pro on an IBM Thinkpad A22P.
When I schedule an Error Check at next reboot it successfully goes through
all 5 stages. When it's complete, it reads : "Windows has finished
checking the disk." However, it just hangs there and does not continue, no
matter what keys I press.
Is it supposed to automatically continue loading at this point? Am I
supposed to press some key-combination to allow it to continue?
The only answer is to hard-shut-down the computer using the power button.
The problem with that, is that it starts the whole Disk Check process over
again, because it "thinks" it did not complete successfully.
Help.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your post!
It is supposed that the process should automatically continue loading at
that point.
I believe there may be something wrong at your startup groups. We may try
the following steps:
1. Run the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe at Start -> Run).
2. Click on the "Startup" tab and remove the checks from each item in the
Startup Items column.
3. Click on the "Services" tab and check "Hide all Microsoft Services".
4. Uncheck all the rest non-Microsoft Services.
5. Click the Apply button.
6. Reboot your computer.
7. Try again.

I have just had the same thing happen on three workstations running XP Pro
(no SP1) during 'routine' maintenance. After running Disk Check, on restart
they all hung at the blue "Windows has finished checking the disk." screen.
The only option is to reset and then you get into a loop. Last-Known-Good
is the only way out of this.
These computers are running very cleanly with no startup items and were
running fine before the attempt to do a Disk Check. I have seen many other
references to the same thing happening to others on the net(nothing in the
MS KB however!); I think there is a bug in Chkdsk!! Also, chkdsk /p from RC
shows errors, chkdsk /r shows a clean disk and fsutil shows NOT dirty!
What the heck is going on,
Thanks,
Ron
