View Full Version : Windows Explorer taking up 100% of the CPU

I'm running WinXP with all thelatest patches and service
pack 1. I quite recently upgraded my computer, and
therefor had to reinstall the OS and reinstall all the
patches. Since then, the inwdows explorer executable
(explorer.exe) has occasionally gone completely barmy,
taking up over 100'000K of memory and 90 odd % of the
CPU, according to task manager. The computer, naturally,
slows down to a crawl whenever this happens. I haven't
been able to find any steady cause. Sometimes it seems to
happen randomly, sometimes it's when i try to play an avi
file, no matter what program I use to try and play it.

As a side note, i've now installed windows update 811493
5 times, and every time I re-run the update scan, it
claims the update needs to be installed again. This
happens whether I restart the machine between checks or
not.

Anyone got any ideas about this?
