Should I be very cautious about downloading and installing XP-Service Pack 2?
I've heard that it causes more grief than good - is this true?

Do it. Just make sure you turn off your anti-virus program just prior to
clicking the Download. Don't touch anything unless instructed to until the
download is complete. Follow up by visiting Windows Updates. There have been
many since SP2. Download updates with your A/V off also.

I would recommend downloading the full network install of SP2. This way you
would have it locally if you want:

1) To reformat your hard drive and reinstall your XP

2) Create a "slipstreamed" XP SP2 installation CD.
