the other day my power suddenly went out for just a few
seconds and ever since then my computer gives me an error
message with some mumbo jumbo stuff and it says
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and it makes me shut down
windows. i used the procedure on the windows website
which was downloading a file and then making 6 disks then
running them on my computer which did something like run
the startup thing for windows XP and then i go to the
recovery console and type chkdsk /r at the command prompt
but it asks me where the autochk.exe file is and i have no
idea where that is. also it said that if typing chkdsk /r
doesnt work to type fixboot and everything should be fixed
but that didnt work either. can someone please help me
with my problem?

Matt;
Power off, open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
If that fails:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q297185&
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315403

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Can you boot the XP CD and run a repair install? Choose install and then
repair the installation it finds.

I forgot to mention that this error can be specific to certain vendor
models, so you may also want to search their web site for instructions
specific to your model of computer. You'll still likely need to repair,
but they may have some suggestions to avoid this happening again.
