Hi,
The recovery CD cannot repair the OS. It will format and
clean install the OS; that means all data files will be
lost.
Try go to symantec.com to have a on-line security check
for virus and then run anti-spyware soflware to check for
trojan and spywares; you can download Ad-aware 6.0 free of
charge.
If the OS is free from any virus and spywares, run chkdsk,
disk cleanup and defrag.
Anyway, I would suggest you to backup your important files
and re-install XP. It is the best way to cleanup registry
and upkeep the performance of your PC.
