View Full Version : CORRUPTED HARD DRIVE

My computer (running Windows XP Home Edition) boots up okay but before
boot-up is complete I get a message saying "Checking file system on C: the
type of the file system is NTFS, Folume Label is HDD. One of your disks
needs to be checked for consistency....etc."
The checking sytem goes through its paces, telling me when each stage is
completed, then says to wait while computer restarts. (The results don't
indicate what is actually wrong, if anything, with the file system on C:).
When computer reboots, the same message pops up and the whole checking
process restarts, unless I stand by my computer and click out of the disk
check in the 10 seconds it gives me to do this.
I've notices that this problem is also preventing me from defragmenting my
hard drive, so I guess the problems are related.
I've tried checked the boxes for "Automatically fix file system errors" and
"Scan for and attempt recovery of bad files" when doing a disk check, tried
doing the check in Safe Mode, tried Sytstem Restore (but can't get computer
to restore to any of the 7 dates I've tired, despite the fact they're bolded
as Restore Dates) and tried "Last known Configuration"- all to no avail.
Full system scan reveals NO viruses/adware or spys ware.
Any other suggetsions please.

Thanks for anybody's wisdom

You can run a windows command from a command prompt to turn off the check.
The drive has been flagged as "dirty" by the system at some time, it may be
failing or it may be stuck in a rut. The command is ran as follows:
1. using the "run" command from the start menu, type "cmd" (no quotes)
2. in the black command prompt window type "chkntfs /x" (no quotes)

you need to be aware this just turns off the boot time check and if the disk
is faulty it will still fail in the future so be sure to check it with the
manufacturers utility.
