View Full Version : Force TCP/IP When VPN Active

Using: Windows Messenger 5.1, Windows XP, all latest updates installed, IE
6.0.2900.

Background: Followed advice from old posts on how to force Windows Messenger
to use TCP/IP directly, and not the VPN's proxy server. (Tools > Options >
Connection (tab) > Uncheck "I use a proxy server".)

Problem: This still doesn't work. Appears proxy server connection is used.
I suspect the IE settings are overriding the Windows Messenger setting. Can
anyone advise on how I should be configuring the browser? Thanks.

Thanks Joseph, it works. Since I had to write them out anyways (for the
people on our project who are not too computer literate), here are the
step-by-step instructions:

In Windows Messenger:

1. Tools Menu > Options
2. Choose "Connection" tab
3. Uncheck "I use a proxy server".
4. Click the "OK" button.

In Windows XP:

1. Start Menu > Connect To > Show All Connections.
2. Right click on the icon for the VPN connection you are using and chose
Properties.
3. Choose the "Networking" tab.
4. In the area titled "This connection uses the following items", click the
item named "Internet Protocal TCP/IP", then click the "Properties" button.
5. Click the "Advanced" button.
6. On the "General" tab, unclick the "use default gateway on remote
network" check box.
7. Click the "OK" button.
8. Click the "OK" button.
9. Click the "OK" button.
